What Type of Blade to Cut Clay Pipe

What Type of Blade to Cut Clay Pipe.

  1. Hi – I need to cut about 40 short lenghts of 4″ clay pipe. What would be the best tool to acheive a decent square cut?

Angle grider not too even. Could i put a diamond blade in a mitre chop saw, or use a circular tile saw and rotate the pipe through the blade as it cuts?

    Any tips welcome.

NB for those more curious amoung you – I’m stacking the short lenths to make a winerack in a kitchen recess – not bodging my soil pipes!

    Many thanks

  2. I’d go with diamond blade in a chop saw, it will give the square edge needed to make these look right.

But this will need to be brick chop saw. Similar to this:-

You’ll probably need to rotate the pipe to get the depth of cut, but it will be far better (safer and more stable) than a grinder.

  3. You can get special cutters for cutting clay pipes.
They are like a chain with little cutting discs on each link and a handle.
You wrap the chain round and give it a tap at it should cut it cleanly.
You should be able to hire them.

  4. Why titinada cut the pipes some 3mm bigger or so than needed with the cut off saw. Now mark of your actual desired lentgh with masking tape so as to give a square cut, stick a grinding disk in your grinder and grind down to the tape line.

I thought chain cutters were for cast iron?

  6. Probably many ways to do this, and many may be better than others.

If you have a tile saw(bench) I would use that.

Make up a jig (maybe 4 bits of wood clamped to table) so that the pipe can sit in it and then can be rolled easily, steadily and straight.

Remember the tile blade may be pushing the pipe away, and so holding it(especially at the start) may be trickier.

  7. Mudster there are two types of chain cutter one for clay pipe which you just squeeze the handles until the pipe pops and the ones for CI that have a ratchet handle so you can wind in the higher pressure required to cut the Iron.

You will still need to knock the edges of the cut pipe as the chain leaves quite a sharp edge a bit like a cut tile, Hepworth also make a tool for doing this which eses the end whep using Hepsleeve joints.

  8. I used a bench mounted tile cutter in the end with diamond blade – it worked fine – thanks for all you help and advice

  9. Good job. Well done.

We like to hear the results.
