Timothée Chalamet might have expected fans to be somewhat sweeter when he shared the first photo of himself playing confectionary king Willy Wonka.
The actor, 25, uploaded the image to Instagram and Twitter on Sunday and was trolled by thousands of followers, many of whom compared him to the character of Gonzo in “The Muppet Christmas Carol.”
Chalamet is currently in the UK filming “Wonka” — a movie musical about the origins of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book character.
The first photo from the set shows Chalamet in costume, looking as if he were plucked straight from England’s Victorian era, clad in a maroon velvet jacket and a brown top hat.
The “Call Me By Your Name” star was also seen carrying a cane and wearing a patterned scarf tied around his neck.
“Who wore it better?” one Twitter user teased, sharing side-by-side snaps of Chalamet as Wonka and Gonzo as Charles Dickens in “The Muppet Christmas Carol.”
“Gonzo. I still can’t figure out why there’s another Wonka that looks like Christmas Carol,” another humorously wrote.
Meanwhile, there were several others who claimed Chalamet’s ensemble looked a little too hipster to be an accurate portrayal of Willy Wonka.
“Brave choice to make Willy Wonka’s origin story set in 2010 Williamsburg,” quipped Sally Field’s son, Sam Greisman, in a tweet that was liked more than 1,700 times.
“Timothee Chalamet Willy Wonka is what happens when a Hollywood focus group tries to create a Tumblr sexyman,” another remarked, referencing the famous 2010s blogging site.
Meanwhile, another said that filmmakers will “keep making Willy Wonka hotter” and suggested that he will eventually be played by “Aquaman” hunk Jason Momoa. And while some were extraordinarily crass in their intentions for the reworked Wonka, one commenter wanted to bid him a good day, sir, succinctly writing, “the sexification of willy wonka needs to stop.”
But while many may have mocked Chalamet’s Wonka, there were scores of others who expressed their excitement about the first image and the star’s kooky costume.
“OH MY GOD,” exclaimed “Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka beneath the Instagram post.
“All about this x,” Rebel Wilson chimed in.
Chalamet is following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, both of whom have portrayed Willy Wonka in big-screen adaptations.
“Wonka” will also star Olivia Coleman and Sally Hawkins and is set to hit cinemas in 2023.
On Monday, Chalamet didn’kaki langit address the trolling of his costume and instead took to Instagram to share a photo of himself splashed across the cover of Time magazine under the banner headline “NEXT GENERATION LEADERS.”
The star — who will next be seen in the big-budget sci-fi komidi gambar “Dune” — captioned the image: “TIME MAGAZINE. Looking at this like what the f–k how ???!”
